The Fastest, Surest Way to Get an Offshore Oil Rig Job

Many of those thinking or dreaming about breaking into offshore jobs are stumped about how to go about it. It really isn’t that difficult – if you have prior offshore oil rig experience, know somebody, or have some other means of gaining “insider” information. If none of those apply for you, there are some resources and tips that can help get you hired anyways.

Offshore JobsFirst, utilize one of the offshore oil industry hiring services. There are several small companies composed of current and former offshore workers whose sole purpose in life is to help people land jobs in the industry. They are utilizing their industry contacts and knowledge, leveraging the contacts made over the years to help others find employment. These services have a huge range of oil and gas industry contacts, and using both provides the best chance of getting hired, especially for entry level oil jobs.

Second, make sure your resume stands out from the crowd. If you need help with writing a resume that can compete, watch out for those services that will charge an arm and a leg. There are some web sites out there that look at the good and bad at each, and filter out the wheat from the chaff.

Finally, don’t limit yourself to just the Offshore and Oil Guides that are available. Oil and gas industry recruiters do search the big and medium size online directories, so once your resume is setup correctly, get it before as many eyeballs as you can. You will save yourself time and grief and using a ‘Resume Blaster’ service to handle this end of it; there are companies that have the ability to put your resume in front of 1.5 Million employers (including, of course, many in the oil industry). Taking this final step will really help you cover all your bases. It’s all about increasing the odds, and covering half the board for the same prize (your dream job) as betting on a single square simply makes sense.

If you are serious about getting an Offshore Oil Rig Job, take these simple steps:

1. Have a professionally written resume. Most people don’t, so doing so will give you an edge instantly.

2. Take advantage of gaining some experienced industry insiders working for you by utilizing the services of the better oil industry job guides. The leverage you will gain from having ‘inside’ contact is a great way for entry level as well as experienced people to break into the field, and will save you time as well as money.

3. Cover your bases and increase your odds by “shotgunning” your Resume using a good ‘Resume Blaster’ service; it is money well spent. This will ensure that any Drilling and Servicing contractors that don’t get covered by using the contacts of the Offshore job guides and services will see your resume as well.

Following these steps will save yourself many wasted days of searching and wondering, and help you get serious in your quest for an Offshore Oil Job. This career path is really the adventure of a lifetime – the friends, the camaraderie, the new and exciting places (not to mention the money to enjoy it all) make it so much better than your typical stuck-in-traffic, cubicle world type of existence.

Walking into a job interview

Walking into a job interview wearing the wrong attire is like showing up at a black-tie event dressed for a costume party. A bad move you’ll instantly regret. To complete this How-To you will need: Tidy, neatly styled hair A clean face, hands, and fingernails A clean, professional outfit A briefcase or portfolio And a pair of comfortable closed-toe shoes Small, tasteful jewelry A light and subtle perfume or aftershave A manicure Natural-looking makeup And a new haircut

Step 1: Find out dress code
Before the big event, find out how the employees dress where you’ll be interviewing. Ask whoever arranging the interview for you what the dress code is, and if they have any pointers on what to wear.

Step 2: Choose clothes
Find something in your wardrobe that’s in line with what other employees wear, but kick it up a notch—a sharp tie, a colorful scarf or pocket square. Something to separate you from the pack.

Step 3: Don’t go overboard
But don’t go overboard. You want to make a good impression, not a fashion statement.

Step 4: Keep it tasteful
Go easy on the aftershave or perfume too, or the makeup and jewelry—keep things tasteful.

Step 5

Mind you, working while on an oil rig can often be mentally very demanding. Although modern oil rigs feature quite comfortable accommodations by means of good facilities, you have to remember that you will be stuck in the core of nowhere, seeing the same faces day in and trip for 1 whole month when you get a break. Subsequent to your 1-month break, you should see these same deals with again. You can’t drown your sorrows in dark beer every Friday night. As well as dead on the oil rig, you don’t have escape.

oil rig jobsThe men who perform oil rig jobs be mentally tough. They must be tolerant and have wonderful self-control. They can’t get into a fight every time frame someone makes them annoyed. They can’t become distracted even if they feel upset, or maybe angry, or irritated. They can’t become depressed since they can’t see or communicate with their families every event.

When you are in the oil rig job, you’ve got to be self-reliant and learn extremely fast. You don’t need the PhD, but neither can you afford to be a fool. You have to always be alert and vigilant and careful continuously. No one is likely to always look over ones own shoulder to supervise you and you must do everything right. Very similar to construction jobs, or work opportunities in other hazardous climates, mistakes could kill you or your folks. If you are someone who may be careless, or tend to create mistakes, you should stay away from oil rig jobs.

Any time isolation drives you crazy, you had better find a job in an company instead. Overall, oil rig jobs are really difficult and demanding, but really rewarding. Adding the fact that oil prices may very well remain high for another decade, this is fun to get an petrol rig job, if you can be tough enough to manage it.

Usually a male dominated community, jobs on oil rigs get increasingly popular with women expecting to further their chosen career or just keen to acquire a job offshore that offers amazing pay and a few pretty impressive holiday rewards. Some people will actually call the firms but most will send an email and lie to themselves which they really have tried to find a job. Most of the companies you put together probably won’t have acrylic rig jobs for workers without the need of experience because you’ll more than likely be thinking of just the big companies.

Do not forget, the actual work at the rig is done from contractors. If you can’t discover their whereabouts, you’ll be wasting your time and energy. Probably the only thing you might accomplish is to are more frustrated than you already are. So here is a basic formula for finding your first job by using an oil rig. Job Search Tips to Keep in Mind

Whether you’re traveling for an interview or just to explore prospects, check out these 4 tips to keep your job search travel as smooth as can be:

Study up & schedule

job searchBefore you go anywhere for job search, do some research. If you’re headed to a city for a specific event, figure out where you’ll stay and learn what you can do to further your job search in your free time.

Make an itinerary for yourself. Remember that you don’t have to follow it to a T, but it might come in handy when you find yourself with an hour and nothing to do.

Additionally, try to hook up with the local chapter of a professional organization or industry group. Members likely will be able to share valuable information with you about the industry, market, and companies in that city or region that Google simply can’t (sorry, Google).

Pack light

If you’re staying somewhere less than a week, packing everything into carry-on luggage is completely do-able. For a number of years, I traveled more than 20-25 days a month.  I had packing a carry-on and briefcase down to a science. You have your itinerary and know the appropriate dress for all events, so pack with purpose.  If you are not going to wear it, don’t take it with you.

Be TSA savvy

If you’ve flown in the past decade, you know that TSA has some pretty rigid rules, usually matched to exceedingly rigid personnel. Make your travel as smooth as possible by reading up on current regulations before you leave for the airport, not in line for security. Otherwise, you could end up unpacking and repacking your suitcase ?in security. ?

Also, keep in mind that your laptop and other digital devices must be handled correctly.

Don’t forget…

Don’t forget to bring your job search essentials. A stack of business cards, copies of your resume, and your portfolio are important to have on hand when you travel. You never know in your job search when you’re going to meet your next boss!
